Central Piedmont Community College and Charlotte growth as one of the largest community colleges in the country

Since taking over in 1992, Zeiss has overseen CPCC’s growth as one of the largest community colleges in the country with more than 70,000 students annually while becoming a major engine in workforce development in the region’s shifting economy. The school expanded from a single campus in the Elizabeth neighborhood to six across Mecklenburg County, encompassing 3.36 million square feet.

CPCC’s annual operating budget has grown from $46.7 million in 1992 to $202.4 million as Mecklenburg voters approved bond packages to build new facilities, which. The most recent referendum, passed in 2013, pumped $210 million into the college.

“Tony’s contributions to Central Piedmont Community College and Charlotte are immeasurable,” said Edwin A. Dalrymple, chair of CPCC’s board of trustees. “In the 23 years since Tony became the president, CPCC has been transformed into a world class educational institution with a global reach.”

CPCC trustee Ralph Pitts, who was chairman from 2004-14, will lead the presidential search committee.
